As part of the “HEARTS” project, professional staff training was held for the application of PECS in working with children with developmental disabilities.
Within the framework of the HEARTS project – Healthcare Equity and Access for Resilient Targeted Support, which is implemented through the cross-border cooperation program Interreg IPA Croatia – Bosnia and Herzegovina – Montenegro 2021. – 2027, in Slavonski Brod, training of professional staff was held for the application of the PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) method, a communication system intended for people with verbal communication difficulties, especially children with autism spectrum disorders. The training was attended by employees of the Public Institution “Health Center with Inpatient Clinic Žepče”, employees of the “Center for Community Service Provision of Vukovar-Srijem County” and employees of the Association of Parents of Children with Developmental Disabilities – Podgorica, members of the project team.
During the two-day training, experts of various profiles acquired knowledge and practical skills for applying the PECS method in their daily work.
Special emphasis is placed on the development of functional communication through the six phases of PECS, the encouragement of the child’s initiation in communication, and the proper creation and use of communication cards.
