“Professional training for the application of the PECS method in working with children with developmental disabilities within the HEARTS project”

Within the HEARTS project – Healthcare Equity and Access for Resilient Targeted
Support, which is implemented through the Interreg IPA Croatia Cross-Border Cooperation Programme –
Bosnia and Herzegovina – Montenegro 2021–2027, training was held in Slavonski Brod
professional staff on the application of the PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) method –
a communication system intended for people with verbal communication difficulties, especially
children with a diagnosed autism spectrum condition.
The training was attended by employees of partner institutions of the “Center for Providing Services in
community of Vukovar-Srijem County”, Public Institution “Health Center with Inpatient Clinic Žepče”,
and the Association of Parents of Children with Developmental Disabilities in Podgorica.
During the two-day training, experts of various profiles acquired theoretical knowledge and
practical skills for applying the PECS method in everyday work. Special emphasis
is focused on developing functional communication through the six stages of PECS, encouraging the child’s
initiatives in communication and the proper creation and use of communication cards.
The training was conducted by an authorized training center, and the lecturer was a certified PECS trainer from
organization that has an official license to carry out the PECS method.
Through this professional education, participants acquired specialized knowledge and professional competencies.
for working with children who have difficulties in speech and language development. In addition to new knowledge,
experts had the opportunity to exchange experiences and examples of good practice with participants from
partner countries.
